About The College

Government General Degree College, Banarhat, which was recently rechristened Banarhat Kartik Oraon Hindi Government College, was established in the year 2014. The Hindi medium college, the first of its kind in West Bengal, has been hailed as the ‘Dream Project’ of the Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, whose initiative and dedication towards the improvement of educational infrastructure in the region resulted in the birth of this institution. Initially, the college functioned from the temporary campus at Birpara in Alipurduar district. In December 2015, on the verge of completing two consecutive academic sessions, the college has finally shifted to its designated campus, which is located near the Moraghat Tea Garden, Banarhat, in the district of Jalpaiguri.

A newly formed establishment is like a newborn baby – desirous of constant care, support and nourishment, and even the slightest hint of lack can cause severe impairment of development through the formative years. Even though the college has managed to survive initial hiccups despite lack of basic facilities and infrastructure, thanks to a really dedicated and united group of staff, the ever increasing number of students, demands for increased seats and introduction of new subjects can pose serious challenges in the coming days if the requirements are not met and the problems are not heard with a heart.

At present, the college, under the University of North Bengal, offers UG (Honours and Pass) courses in humanities. In 2014, the college started off with Honours and Pass courses being offered by the Departments of Hindi, History, Political Science and Philosophy. Honours course in English was introduced in 2015 with number of seats in all Honours courses being doubled. The college strives to develop to emerge as one of the premier institutions of academic excellence not only from this region, but also of the state, and turn the ‘Dream Project’ of the Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, into reality.
